Quilts of the Civil War
Sewing is something women (and some men) learned as children, and it was immediately seen as a way to support the war effort. Women of both North and South put their needles to work sewing quilts for their soldiers. Distinctive patterns and styles evolved and have been recreated using reproduction fabrics by the women of the Second Battery to provide warmth and “funds” for their soldiers. A display of 20+ quilts is wonderfully eye catching in a camp setting or on a front lawn, enticing people in to hear the stories of quilters from the 1860s. A “trunk show” of these quilts recreated from styles of the 1860s is also available in a presentation for groups.
