Soldiers Aid Society

Some 3,200 Soldiers’ Aid Society groups worked throughout the northern states to support the men serving in the army. These small local groups, mostly made up of women, raised money and supplies to channel into the larger organization of the United States Sanitary Commission. Read more about these aid groups here.

The women of the Second Battery support their soldiers just as their foremothers did 160+ years ago. They recreate a Soldiers’ Aid booth, such as may have been done in small communities, to “collect” donations of goods for the soldiers, to scrape and pick lint, to roll bandages, and encourage people to “attend” an SAS meeting. It is an interactive display with hands-on activities for all ages. History of the SAS and Sanitary Commission can also be a presentation for groups.
